PSC Regulator Called FPL Executives 47 Times

September 23, 2009

PowerLinesInvestigating dubious relationships between the Public Service Commission and Florida Power & Light, the Sun-Sentinel uncovered records of dozens of phone calls between a PSC lobbyist — who resigned earlier this month after an ethics inquiry began — to several executives at FPL.

Ryder Rudd, the former PSC lobbyist, placed at least 47 calls to FPL executives in the five months after their request for their largest rate hike ever.

From the Herald:

Of those calls, 25 were exchanged with Paul Hamilton, an FPL lobbyist and vice president of state legislative affairs; six with Ken Hoffman, an FPL lobbyist and vice president of regulatory relations; and 16 with Ed Tancer, FPL’s senior vice president of governmental affairs.

“I don’t know what the conversations were about, but it sounds like an awful lot of them when you have a major rate case coming before you,” said Commissioner Nancy Argenziano. “He broke no law, but does it pass the smell test? Obviously not.”

We couldn’t agree more, Nancy.
