Rubio fundraiser indicted on wire and mail fraud charges

September 30, 2009

MendelsohnThe Miami Herald reports that, “Dr. Alan Mendelsohn, a Hollywood ophthalmologist who has raised millions for Florida politicians, surrendered to FBI agents on charges linked to his alleged efforts to thwart a 2000-05 state investigation into Mutual Benefits Corp., a Fort Lauderdale life insurance company.”

Most recently, Mendelsohn has been working as a fundraiser for Marco Rubio’s U.S. Senate campaign, after previously working for Charlie Crist in his 2006 gubernatorial campaign.

It’s a breaking news story. We’ve reported on stories beneficial to both Rubio and Crist, just like we’ve reported stories negative to both Rubio and Crist. Unless the story isn’t true or we got something wrong, it’s fair game the way it is.

Seems more damaging to Rubio…who started his campaign at Mendelsohn’s home and remained Rubio’s fundraiser after Mendelsohn’s resignation from his post as treasurer of the Florida Medical Association PAC, amid “rampant speculation the stepdown was precipitated by the revelation that Mendelsohn was tied to Joel Steinger, the convicted felon and alleged Ponzi schemer behind the billion-dollar Mutual Benefits viatical fraud.”
